During this ABC27 Good Day PA segment, Dr. Michael Verber of Verber Dental Group and Dr. Irada Lahnemann of Valley Pediatric Dentistry discussed Team Smile, a national program that partners dental professionals, community volunteers, and sports organizations to provide free dental care for children in need.
The event, held at FNB Field with the Harrisburg Senators, removed common barriers like transportation costs by bringing local children directly to the stadium for services including cleanings, X-rays, and extractions. Dr. Lahnemann noted that combining a fun, festive atmosphere—complete with mascots and music—with dental care helps ease children’s fears while delivering meaningful, free treatment.
Both doctors emphasized that access to pediatric dental care remains a significant challenge in Central Pennsylvania due to provider shortages, low-income families lacking transportation, and many children without an established dental home.
Delta Dental Community Care Foundation served as the primary sponsor of the event and has also contributed $300,000 in scholarships to Central Penn College, supporting broader workforce development efforts to address the provider shortage.
